The Tales of Beedle the Bard is a book of children's stories by British author J. K. Rowling. It purports to be the storybook of the same name mentioned in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the last book of the Harry Potter series.[2]

The book was originally produced in a limited edition of only seven copies, each handwritten and illustrated by J. K. Rowling.[3] One of them was offered for auction in late 2007 and was expected to sell for £50,000 ($103,000); ultimately it was bought for £1.95 million ($3.98 million) by Amazon.com, making the selling price the highest achieved at auction for a modern literary manuscript.[4][5] The money earned at the auction of the book was donated to The Children's Voice charity campaign.[6]

The book was published for the general public on 4 December 2008, with the proceeds going to the

Throughout the six previous novels in the Harry Potter series, the main character, Harry Potter, has struggled with the inherent difficulties of adolescence along with being a famous wizard. When Harry was a baby, Lord Voldemort, a powerful evil wizard, murdered Harry's parents but mysteriously vanished after attempting to kill Harry. This results in Harry's immediate fame, and his being placed in the care of his muggle, or non-magical, relatives Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon.

Harry re-enters the wizarding world at age 11, enrolling in the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He makes friends with Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, and is soon confronted by Lord Voldemort, who is trying to regain power (and a body). Returning to school after summer break, there are several attacks on students after the legendary "Chamber of Secrets" is thought to be opened. Harry ends the attacks by killing a Basilisk and defeating Lord Voldemort's "memory" stored in an enchanted diary. The following year, Harry hears that he has been targeted by escaped murderer Sirius Black. Despite stringent security measures at Hogwarts, Harry is confronted by Black at the end of his third year of schooling and Harry learns that Black was framed and is his godfather. Harry's fourth year of school sees him entered in a dangerous magical competition called the Triwizard Tournament. At the conclusion of the Tournament, Harry witnesses the return of Lord Voldemort to full strength. When the next school year begins, the Ministry of Magic appoints Dolores Umbridge as the new High Inquisitor of Hogwarts. After forming an underground student group in opposition to Umbridge, Harry and several of his friends face off against Voldemort's Death Eaters, a group of Dark witches and wizards, and narrowly defeat them. In Harry's sixth year of school, he learns that Voldemort has been using Horcruxes to become immortal. Horcruxes are fragments of the soul that are placed within an object so that when the body dies, a part of the soul remains and the person can be regenerated or resurrected.[8] However, the destruction of the creator's body leaves the wizard or witch in a state of half-life, without corporeal form.[9] When returning from a mission to discover a Horcrux, Professor Dumbledore, the Headmaster of the school and Harry's mentor, is murdered by Severus Snape, a teacher at the school with whom Harry is consistently at odds and who Harry has suspected of being a Death Eater. At the conclusion of the book, Harry pledges not to return to school the following year and to search for Horcruxes instead.

Plot summary

Following Dumbledore's death, Voldemort has completed his ascension to power and gains control of the Ministry of Magic. Harry, Ron, and Hermione drop out of school so that they can find and destroy Voldemort's remaining three Horcruxes. They isolate themselves to ensure the safety of their family and friends. They do not have much knowledge about the remaining Horcruxes except the possibility that two of them are objects that belonged to Hogwarts founders Rowena Ravenclaw and Helga Hufflepuff, and that the third is Nagini, Voldemort's snake familiar. The locations of the two founders' objects are unknown, and Nagini is presumed to be with Voldemort himself. As they search for the Horcruxes, the trio learn details about Dumbledore's past, as well as Snape's true motives.

The trio recovers the first of Voldemort's Horcruxes, Salazar Slytherin's locket, by infiltrating the Ministry of Magic. They recover the Sword of Godric Gryffindor; it is one of a few objects that can be used to destroy Horcruxes, and they use it to destroy the locket. In their travels the trio come across a strange symbol, which an eccentric wizard named Xenophilius Lovegood tells them represents the mythical Deathly Hallows. The Hallows are revealed to be three sacred objects: the Resurrection Stone, a stone with the power to bring others back to life; the Elder Wand, an unbeatable wand; and an infallible Invisibility Cloak. Harry learns that Voldemort is after the Elder Wand, but the trio decides that discovering Voldemort's Horcruxes is more important than procuring the wand for themselves. They break into Bellatrix Lestrange's vault at the Wizarding Bank Gringotts to recover another Horcrux, the cup of Helga Hufflepuff. Harry learns that another Horcrux is hidden in Hogwarts, and Harry, Ron, and Hermione enter the school. They find this Horcrux, the Diadem of Ravenclaw, and successfully destroy both.

The book culminates in the Battle of Hogwarts. Harry, Ron, and Hermione, in conjunction with students and members of the wizarding world opposed to the rise of Voldemort, defend Hogwarts from Voldemort, his Death Eaters, and various magical creatures. Several major characters are killed in the first wave of the battle. Harry discovers that Voldemort inadvertently made Harry a Horcrux when he attacked him as a baby, and that he would have to die to destroy Voldemort. Harry surrenders himself to Voldemort, who attacks Harry with the Killing Curse, sending Harry to a sort of Limbo between life and death. There, Harry meets Dumbledore who explains that because Voldemort used Harry's blood to regain his full strength, Harry is protected from any harm that Voldemort could commit, meaning that the Horcrux inside of Harry is destroyed but that he can return to his body despite being hit by the Killing Curse. Harry then returns to his body, the battle resumes, and after the last remaining Horcrux destroyed, Harry is able to defeat Voldemort.

Throughout the five previous novels in the Harry Potter series, the main character, Harry Potter, has struggled with the difficulties that come with growing up and the added challenge of being a famous wizard. When Harry was a baby, Lord Voldemort, the most powerful evil wizard in living memory, killed Harry's parents but mysteriously vanished after trying to kill Harry. This results in Harry's immediate fame, and his being placed in the care of his muggle (non-magical) Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon Dursley.

Harry enters the wizarding world at the age of 11, enrolling in Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He makes friends with Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, and is confronted by Lord Voldemort trying to regain power. In his second year, several attacks on students take place at Hogwarts after the legendary "Chamber of Secrets" is opened. Harry ends the attacks by killing a Basilisk and defeating another attempt by Lord Voldemort to return to full strength. The following year, Harry hears that he has been targeted by escaped murderer Sirius Black. Despite stringent security measures at Hogwarts, Harry is confronted by Black at the end of his third year of schooling and Harry learns that Black was framed and is actually Harry's godfather. After forming an underground student group in opposition to Umbridge, Harry and several of his friends face off against Voldemort's Death Eaters, a group of Dark witches and wizards, and narrowly defeat them, though Sirius is slain in a rescue attempt. In the battle's aftermath, Dumbledore reveals Voldemort tried to kill Harry because of a prophecy that indicates he will destroy Voldemort.

Harry Potter accompanies Albus Dumbledore on a trip to persuade retired Hogwarts professor Horace Slughorn to return to teaching, before arriving at The Burrow.

At Hogwarts, Severus Snape is named the new Defence Against the Dark Arts instructor, with Slughorn becoming the Potions teacher. Harry and Ron are able to enrol in his class, but Harry's borrowed book has notes and corrections that yield better results than the textbook's instructions, winning him a vial of Felix Felicis, a luck potion, on his first day in class. The book formerly belonged to "The Half-Blood Prince".

Harry becomes suspicious of his rival Draco Malfoy, after overhearing several of his conversations, and when Katie Bell is almost killed while attempting to deliver a cursed necklace under the influence of the Imperius Curse. Meanwhile, Ron is displeased with his younger sister Ginny dating anybody, forcing Harry to ignore his attraction. After an argument with Ginny in which Ron's dating inexperience is made clear, Ron takes up with Lavender Brown, creating a divide between him and Hermione. This rift is only mended when he accidentally consumes a love potion attracting him to Romilda Vane, and then poisoned mead which almost kills him.

Dumbledore privately tutors Harry, using his Pensieve to show Harry memories of Voldemort's past. Dumbledore asks Harry to retrieve a key memory from Slughorn regarding Slughorn's conversation with a sixteen-year-old Tom Riddle. Harry uses some of his Felix Felicis to acquire the memory.

The memories reveal that Voldemort splintered his soul into six fragments attached to objects called Horcruxes, while leaving a seventh piece in his body, in order to achieve immortality. As long as any of the Horcruxes exists Voldemort cannot be killed. Two Horcruxes have been destroyed - Tom Riddle's diary, by Harry in the Chamber of Secrets four years earlier[HP2]; and Marvolo Gaunt's ring, by Dumbledore during the summer before this school year. Three of the remaining Horcruxes are a locket formerly owned by Salazar Slytherin, a cup formerly owned by Helga Hufflepuff, and the snake Nagini. Dumbledore speculates that the sixth unidentified Horcrux may be something associated with Gryffindor or Ravenclaw, as Riddle would have wanted something from each of the houses of Hogwarts, which he regarded as his home.

After seeing Harry cast an unusual curse, "Sectumsempra" (a dark curse which leaves deep gashes) against Draco Malfoy, Snape attempts to confiscate the Half-Blood Prince's Potions book, but Harry gives him Ron's copy instead and hides his copy in the Room of Requirement. Harry gets detention from Snape and misses the Quidditch finals, but Gryffindor wins the Cup. During the victory celebration Harry spontaneously kisses Ginny, and with Ron's grudging approval they start dating.

Dumbledore locates another Horcrux and asks Harry to accompany him to destroy it. They travel to a cave and retrieve a locket, but Dumbledore is weakened after drinking a potion to obtain the Horcrux. Harry then successfully apparates to Hogsmeade with Dumbledore. After they return to Hogsmeade, they see the Dark Mark over the Astronomy Tower at Hogwarts and hurry back to the school. Dumbledore and an invisible Harry are confronted atop the tower by Draco Malfoy. Draco admits that he was behind two attacks on Hogwarts students, with both objects intended for Dumbledore, whom Voldemort had ordered Draco to kill. Dumbledore offers Draco protection from the Death Eaters, and Draco cannot bring himself to kill Dumbledore, even with the urging of fellow Death Eaters once they arrive. Instead, Snape kills Dumbledore. Harry, enraged and freed from immobility by Dumbledore's death, pursues Snape, who reveals that he is the Half-Blood Prince and fends off Harry's attacks (and Buckbeak who joins in to help Harry) until he gets outside Hogwarts grounds and Disapparates.

Harry recovers the locket from Dumbledore's body, only to discover it is a fake left by someone with the initials R. A. B., who stole the real Horcrux and left a note about his opposition to Voldemort. McGonagall tries to question Harry about what he was doing with Dumbledore and he refuses to say. McGonagall calls a meeting of the Heads of House (with Slughorn taking Snape's spot) to decide what to do. They decide to close the school, but at Harry's suggestion, agree to wait until Dumbledore's funeral so the students can say goodbye. Harry decides to end his relationship with Ginny because he fears that their relationship would place Ginny in danger. The Minister arrives and McGonagall lets Harry leave so he can avoid the Minister. The school year ends with Dumbledore's funeral. He and his wand are buried in a tomb beside the lake on Hogwarts's grounds. Harry vows not to return to school but to hunt for the remaining Horcruxes instead.

Harry Potter and his cousin Dudley Dursley are attacked by Dementors, but Harry drives them off with a Patronus charm. The Ministry of Magic detects the underage wizardry and expels Harry from Hogwarts, but this is modified to a trial later in the summer. Harry is later awoken by the arrival of a number of wizards who escort him to the headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix, a secret organisation founded by Dumbledore. Harry learns that under the Ministry's influence The Daily Prophet has launched a campaign against anyone who claims that Lord Voldemort has returned.

Harry and Arthur Weasley head to the court for Harry's trial. With the help of Dumbledore and Harry's neighbour, Mrs. Figg, Harry is cleared of all charges and returns to school. Upon arrival, Harry sees creatures pulling the carriages to Hogwarts. Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Neville share a carriage with Luna Lovegood, an odd but kind girl who claims she can also see the creatures. The Minister of Magic Cornelius Fudge appoints a new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, Dolores Umbridge, a senior Ministry official who refuses to teach practical magic, as the Ministry fears Dumbledore will organise his own wizard army. For claiming Voldemort has returned, Harry is forced to write, "I must not tell lies," repeatedly in his own blood, creating a scar on his hand.

Harry sees Luna in the forest with the creatures that pulled the Hogwarts carriages. She tells him that they are called Thestrals and can only be seen by those who have seen death. Luna mentions that the Thestrals are very gentle, but people avoid them because of their evil looks.

As Umbridge's control over the school increases, Ron and Hermione aid Harry in forming a secret group to train students in defensive spells, calling themselves "Dumbledore's Army". The Slytherin students are recruited by Umbridge to uncover the group. Meanwhile, Harry and Cho develop romantic feelings for each other. The group is soon discovered by the Slytherins and Umbridge as Cho exposes them. Harry slowly starts to ignore Cho.

Harry has a nightmare involving an attack upon Arthur Weasley in the Department of Mysteries that echoes an actual attack. Fearing Voldemort will exploit his connection to Harry, Dumbledore instructs Professor Snape to give Harry Occlumency lessons to block his mind from Voldemort's influence.

Bellatrix Lestrange, Sirius Black's deranged cousin, escapes from Azkaban along with nine other Death Eaters. At Hogwarts, Umbridge, Filch, and Umbridge's Inquisitorial Squad uncover Dumbledore's Army after illegally interrogating Cho with Veritaserum. Dumbledore is questioned and escapes as Fudge orders his arrest. With Dumbledore gone, Umbridge becomes the new Headmistress.

With Hagrid likely to be fired due to Umbridge's prejudice against "half-breeds", he shows Harry, Ron and Hermione his Giant half-brother, Grawp. Hagrid asks them to take care of Grawp if anything happens to him.

During an exam the Weasley twins revolt and set off fireworks in the Great Hall, causing chaos for Umbridge. Harry has a vision of Sirius being tortured by Voldemort within the Department of Mysteries. Harry, Ron, and Hermione rush to search for Sirius, but Umbridge catches them and begins interrogating Harry, where she slaps him across the face when he claims that he was not trying to reach Dumbledore. Hermione deceives Umbridge into entering the Forbidden Forest along with Harry and her in search of a weapon, leading her to the hiding place of Grawp only to find him missing. Centaurs, who have their own issues with the Ministry, emerge and carry the Headmistress into the darkness after she attacks them. Harry, Hermione, Ron, Luna, Neville and Ginny fly to the Ministry of Magic on the Thestrals' backs to save Sirius.

The six engage in a duel in the Department of Mysteries.

The six enter the Department of Mysteries, where they uncover a prophecy involving Harry and Voldemort, but are ambushed by Death Eaters including Lucius Malfoy and Bellatrix Lestrange. Lucius reveals that Sirius isn't in any danger and that Harry only saw what Voldemort wanted him to see. Lucius attempts to persuade Harry to give him the prophecy, telling him it will reveal why Voldemort tried to kill him when he was an infant. Harry refuses and a fight between Dumbledore's Army and the Death Eaters ensues. The Death Eaters take everyone except Harry as hostages, threatening to kill them if he does not surrender the prophecy. Harry hands over the prophecy just as The Order of the Phoenix arrives. They attack the Death Eaters and Lucius drops the prophecy, destroying it. A battle erupts and Bellatrix kills Sirius. Harry corners Bellatrix in the Atrium and attempts to torture her with the Cruciatus Curse, but to no avail. Voldemort appears, tempting Harry to give in to his hatred for Bellatrix. Harry turns his wand on Voldemort who disarms him. Before Voldemort can kill Harry, Dumbledore emerges.

A duel between Voldemort and Dumbledore ensues. After it ends in a stalemate Voldemort attempts to possess Harry but is repelled by the love Harry has for his friends and Sirius. Ministry officials arrive via the Floo Network moments before Voldemort disapparates. Fudge is forced to admit that Voldemort has returned. Harry is vindicated, Umbridge is suspended, and Dumbledore returns as headmaster.

Dumbledore explains that he distanced himself from Harry all year hoping it would lessen the risk of Voldemort using their connection. Harry comes to terms with the prophecy; he or Voldemort will kill the other. Going home for the summer, Harry tells his friends that they have one thing Voldemort does not have: love, something worth fighting for.

Challenges: Books Awards II, Fall Into Reading 2008, From the Stacks

The fourth installment in the series, after reading the first three fairly close together I needed a break, plus this being the largest of the series, I needed to gear up to read that much, especially after reading Breaking Dawn.

This wasn’t my favorite so far. The beginning felt like it dragged on and most of it didn’t seem all the necessary. I did sort of miss the fact that they weren’t playing Quiddich throughout the book and instead focusing on the Tri Wizard Tournament.

Once I finished I felt that it was worth it all in the end, but it did take me quite awhile to read and I’m sure that I will be taking another long deserved break before starting the next in the series, but I’m starting to get more excited having accomplishing this major feat. I’m halfway there.

Having lost his temper with his Aunt Marge and inadvertently causing her to magically inflate, Harry Potter flees the Dursleys'. Harry takes the Knight Bus to The Leaky Cauldron, where he meets Cornelius Fudge, the Minister of Magic. Fudge informs Harry that Aunt Marge has been deflated and that he will not be punished. The Ministry of Magic is simply concerned about Harry's safety due to the escape of mass-murder Sirius Black from the wizarding prison Azkaban. Black was a great friend of the Potter family and Harry's godfather, but betrayed the family to the evil Lord Voldemort. Voldemort killed Harry's parents but, when he tried to kill Harry, mysteriously vanished. Afterward, Black murdered their friend Peter Pettigrew along with 12 bystanders.

Harry and his friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger return to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and find security has been tightened because of Black's escape. The grounds are now guarded by Dementors, dark, sinister beings that drain the happiness of anyone nearby and cause Harry to pass out. Remus Lupin, the school's new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher tells Harry he is more vulnerable to the Dementors because he has seen genuine horrors in his past. Lupin agrees to teach Harry the Patronus Charm, a shield against the Dementors.

Harry is depressed to learn he will not be allowed to visit Hogsmeade, the local village most students are allowed to visit on weekends. He is also angry with Draco Malfoy for ruining Hagrid's first lesson as Care of Magical Creatures teacher. Malfoy deliberately allows himself to be attacked by Buckbeak, Hagrid's beloved Hippogriff, and his father ensures that Buckbeak is sentenced to be executed at the end of the school year. Over the course of the year, Hermione uses a Time-Turner to travel in time and attend classes held at the same time. Black manages to break into the castle twice, but is unable to reach Harry. Fred and George Weasley show Harry a secret passageway to Hogsmeade and give him the Marauder's Map.

During one illicit visit to the village, Harry is nearly caught while Ron discovers that Scabbers, Ron's rat, has disappeared. Ron believes he has been eaten by Crookshanks, Hermione's cat, causing a falling-out between him and Hermione. Hermione later finds Scabbers in Hagrid's hut when the three of them visit him before Buckbeak's execution. On their way back from the hut, Ron is suddenly attacked by a large black dog and dragged into a passage beneath a magical tree, the Whomping Willow.

Harry and Hermione follow them in and find themselves in a old, boarded-up shack known as the Shrieking Shack. They also discover that the dog is the animagus Sirius Black. Harry attempts to attack Black when Lupin arrives. Hermione confronts Lupin about habits she has observed during her classes with him and Lupin admits to being a werewolf. Lupin explains that he, Black, Pettigrew, and James Potter, Harry's father, were great friends and called themselves the "Marauders". To make Lupin's transformations more enjoyable, his friends all became Animagi, humans who can turn into animals at will. The Marauders remained friends after growing up, and when they learned Voldemort was after the Potters, Black became their Secret-Keeper. However, Black then reveals that he had secretly switched this duty with Pettigrew in order to serve as a decoy. Black states Pettigrew is the betrayer and, rather than being murdered by Black, is actually Scabbers.

Lupin and Sirius force Pettigrew to reveal himself, and Pettigrew transforms from Scabbers and back into human form. He admits to the story, but Harry stops Black and Lupin from killing him and becoming murderers themselves. Instead, Harry persuades them to take Pettigrew back to Hogwarts castle in order to clear Sirus's name. However, as they and they return to the castle the full moon emerges and Lupin transforms. Pettigrew escapes while Dementors descend on the others. They are saved at the last minute by a Patronus Harry believes was cast by his father.

Harry awakes in the castle to learn that Black has been captured. To save him, Harry and Hermione use the Time-Turner to travel back in time and prevent his capture. Harry and Hermione rescue Buckbeak and re-watch the scenes of the night, until they see the Dementors cornering Harry and Sirius. Harry is determined to see who sent the Patronus, only to realize that it was himself. Sirius is rescued and flees on Buckbeak. Lupin, outed as a werewolf, resigns. Harry is worried that Pettigrew may help Voldemort to return, but Dumbledore says Harry may be grateful that he helped save Pettigrew's life.

This book is the only one without Voldemort, and to me, it is the best one: it sets the stage for the crucial later action (Snape’s tie to Harry being essentially ordained through his history with the Potters, Pettigrew being in Harry’s debt) far more than the first two, it is structurally perfect and immediately exciting, starting from the moment when Harry blows up his aunt (I picture her as a giant Violet Beauregarde still), and it just seems to get to the heart of what matters in this series: friendship, self-doubt, loyalty, faith, courage, failure as a necessary precursor to success. J.K. Rowling also wrote this in one year. I mean, I’ve spent a year of my life going through my purse looking for gum.

Best: the Knight Bus, and poor hilarious Stan; the part where Harry gets to be free in Diagon Alley for the first time; the fact that chocolate is prescribed for people who have come in contact with dementors; Lupin in every single scene; the part where Harry shoots a Patronus at dementor-Malfoy; the Quidditch Cup; the moment when you find out Lupin and James Potter had created the Marauder’s Map; the epic Sirius-Pettigrew twist at the end of the book, which is told perfectly and doesn’t seem either underwhelming or contrived, as a lot of twists do; the secondary twist when Harry is sure his father cast the Patronus, but realizes at the last minute that he did it.

Worst: when Draco taunts Buckbeak and gets Hagrid in trouble; the flobberworms.

Today, I’ll be blabbing about Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the sequel of J.K. Rowling’s popular bestselling novel which is none other than Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Sure thing, Harry Potter series is one of the most admired books of today’s generation and Harry Potter will always be an icon of our vivid imagination, a hero in the eyes of the witches and wizards, Harry Potter who triumph over HE-WHO-MUST-NOT-BE-NAMED.

As I’ve mentioned earlier, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is the second novel in the Harry Potter series, the book was published on July 2, 1998, where it had won a prominent Nestlé Smarties Book Prize for the age 9-11 category. It also won the British Book Awards’ Children’s Book of the Year. I wouldn’t be surprised if this book was recognized all over the world since this is so far the best novel ever written for kids. Even without watching the movie adaptation, you’ll be able to live… love… and laugh with each character as you continue to unknot the mystery behind the witchcraft and wizarding world. If you love the movie adaptation, there is without a doubt that you’ll love this book a hundred times and more. Harry Potter is destined for greatness, that’s how he was described in this tale.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
The Summary

Harry Potter spent his summer vacation back at the Muggle world, with the Dursleys. Number 4 Privet Drive wasn’t really a place called home for Harry. Both his Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon aren’t fond of him, not even his only cousin Dudley Dursley. He was treated like a house servant, his owl was locked up in its cage and he’s not allowed to use magic, not only because it’s against the rules of the wizarding world but the whole household forbids him to use magic. Uttering the word “magic” is in fact prohibited around the house. What could be worse than that? Harry felt even more isolated when he hadn’t received any letters from his friends at Hogwarts, not even a single letter from Hermoine Granger and Ron Weasley. dobbyHe later learned that a house elf named Dobby was preventing the letters for Harry to reach him. Dobby warned Harry about the terrible things that could happen to him if he ever returns to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. But Harry couldn’t find the answers from Dobby as to why he must not return to Hogwarts.

Being with the Dursley, Harry felt the urged to be at Hogwarts all the more. Hogwarts is Harry Potter’s home. Due to the fact that Ron had not received any letter from Harry, he together with his brother George and Fred came to rescue Harry, bringing along his dad’s flying old turquoise car. The three of them brought Harry and Hedwig at the Burrow, Weasley’s humble sanctuary. It wasn’t so spacious but Harry was in amazement seeing the magical things they have before his very eyes. Being at the Weasleys for a short period of time brought joy and fun to Harry of which he never had during the time he spent at the Dursleys. He learned about de-gnoming, with gnomes which are nothing like Santa Claus. It was small and leathery looking, with a large, knobby, bald head exactly like a potato. He learned how to travel using Floo powder, though it was tough in the beginning when he’s supposed to go to Diagon Alley but appeared in Knockturn Alley instead.

flying carHarry and Ron was as excited as everyone else to go back to Hogwarts but something or someone is preventing them to get through Platform nine and three-quarters. They missed the Hogwarts Express., so they took the flying Ford Anglia and followed the train. They were almost crushed by the whomping willow when they landed on that tree. The car disappeared before them, while they were brought to Professor Snape’s office for interrogation. They could’ve been expelled for flying the car without permission. But luck is on their side, somehow. The following day, Ron received a howler from Mrs. Weasley —–

“— STEALING THE CAR, I WOULDN’T HAVE BEEN SURPRISED IF THEY’D EXPELLED YOU, YOU WAIT TILL I GET HOLD OF YOU, I DON’T SUPPOSED YOU STOPPED TO THINK WHAT YOU’RE FATHER AND I WENT THROUGH WHEN WE SAW IT WAS GONE—”

A new teacher named Gilderoy Lockhart will be teaching them “Defense Against the Dark Arts”. Professor Gilderoy Lockhart, Order of Merlin, Third class, Honorary Member of the Dark Force Defense League, and five-time winner of Witch Weekly’s Most-Charming-Smile Award. Girls adore him, but the boys simply aren’t pleased of his charm, especially Harry. When Harry got an accident during the Quidditch match after he was strangely smashed by the rogue Bludger on his elbow, Gilderoy Lockhart came to the rescue, as much as Harry rebuffed his help, he then cast a spell on Harry which caused him to have a deflated arm. Thus, Harry just toddles up to the hospital wing and have Madam Pomfrey treat him a dosage of Skele-Gro. While resting alone in the hospital wing, Dobby appeared again to warn Harry about the terrible things that are about to happen to him. He told Harry that he wasn’t able to prevent him from coming back to Hogwarts by stopping the barrier on Platform 9 ¾. And now he put a spell on the rogue Bludger to hit Harry, just so he wanted Harry to be sent back home.

harry n ginnyThe Hearthrob Harry Potter: Side Tracked

Ginny Weasley, Ron’s younger sister came to Hogwarts this year. After seeing Harry at King’s Cross, this young Weasley developed a huge crush on our charming hero. She often talks about Harry the whole summer and the sight of Harry in her presence makes her blush even more. And on Valentine’s Day, when Lockhart advanced to make it a special day for everyone, a dozen of dwarfs wearing golden wings and carrying harps, of which Lockhart called as his friendly, card-carrying cupids, were barging into their classes to deliver valentines. One of the dwarfs caught Harry and sang a valentine message for him:

“His eyes are as green as a fresh pickled toad,

His hair is as dark as a blackboard.

I wish he was mine, he’s really divine,

The hero who conquered the Dark Lord”

The message was from Ginny Weasley of course. And Draco Malfoy could only utter, “I don’t think Potter liked your valentine much!” Well, I personally think that Ginny could be the right girl for Harry. Brave, Innocent and sweet, this pair will come a long way if J.K. Rowling will give them the chance. But what do you know, I think they might have been— …I’m not going to spoil you that much.

“I never really gave up on you. Not really. I always hoped… Hermione told me to get on with life, maybe go out with some other people, relax a bit around you, because I never used to be able to talk if you were in the room, remember? And she thought you might take a bit more notice if I was a bit more – myself.”

— Ginny Weasley on Harry Potter (This is not part of HP:Book 2)

The Chamber of Secrets

Moving on with the summary, there have been a lot of incidents lately in Hogwarts but the most fearful one was when they learned that the Chamber of Secrets has been opened once again. Muggle-born or Mudblood students were being attacked and had gone petrified, even Argus Filch’s cat named Mrs. Norris and a ghost like Nearly Headless Nick. It’s been written on the wall,

“THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS HAS BEEN OPENED. ENEMIES OF THE HEIR, BEWARE”

Mostly, everyone blamed Harry, naming him as the heir of Salazar Slytherin since they learned that Harry is a Parselmouth, he can talk to snakes. Being able to talk to snakes is what Salazar Slytherin was famous for, that’s why the Slytherin House has a serpent symbol. But Harry refused to accept this fact since the Sorting Hat placed him in Gryffindor.

reading toms diaryOn the other hand, history repeats itself. Harry found an old diary owned by T.M. Riddle or Tom Marvolo Riddle. He found out that the same incident happened 50 years ago when Tom was on his fifth year in Hogwarts; the Chamber of Secrets was opened and the monster attacked a number of students, finally killing one. It turned out that the culprit was Rubeus Hagrid who kept a so-called monster under the cupboard. Hagrid was expelled for that particular reason but Harry would never believe what he had found out. And now that this monster is attacking once again, Hagrid was taken to Azkaban as the prime suspect of the current unpleasant incident at Hogwarts. But before he was taken away, he left a message for Ron and Harry,

“If anyone wanted ter find out some stuff, all they’d have ter do would be ter follow the spiders. That’d lead ‘em right!”

So Ron and Harry followed the spiders with Fang, Hagrid’s boarhound pet and came to know a gigantic spider Aragog and his wife Mosag. They learned that Hagrid was innocent after all, Aragog told them the things they needed to know about the incident which occurred 50 years ago. While unraveling the mystery behind the attacked, Ron and Harry found out that Moaning Myrtle was the student who got killed during the time of Tom Riddle, 50 years passed. They also found out about the Basilisk, the poisonous serpent which was responsible of the attacked.

at the chamber with ginnyAfter learning and sorting out their clues, they found out the Ginny Weasley was taken by the culprit. With a slight hope to save Ginny, both went down to the Chamber of Secrets with Gilderoy Lockhart but due to minor circumstances, Harry was separated from Ron and Lockhart. He is destined to face the monster which lurks around Hogwarts and save Ginny alone. Later on something has been revealed to Harry; Tom Marvolo Riddle is actually LORD VOLDEMORT himself. He told Harry that he was the one who manipulated Ginny to open the Chamber of Secrets through his diary. Ginny was able to obtain the Diary because Lucious Malfoy slipped it through her old Trasfiguration book. Harry fought along with Fawkes (Professor Dumbledore’s Phoenix), defeated the gigantic serpent and Lord Voldemort as the 16-year old Tom Riddle.defeating the basilisk Harry was able to save Ginny in the end; he was also able to free Dobby from his master and freed Hagrid from Azkaban. Harry’s very rare gifts and bravery made him triumphant in all his actions, thus it’s his choices that shows what he truly is, far more than his abilities.

As for me, I simply love this book. It’s well written and J.K. Rowling sure knows how to establish great characters, amazing plot and astounding magical well being.

Harry Potter: Harry Potter is the famous eleven year old child of Lily and James Potter, who is the only known wizard to have survived any attack from the evil Voldemort. A weak boy with glasses and brown messy hair, Harry has lived with his mean aunt and uncle Dursley in England since his parents were killed at age one. When he turns eleven, he is taken away to Hogwarts, the wizard's school, where he learns to fly, becomes friends with Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, and saves the school from Voldemort's evil schemes of stealing the Sorcerer's Stone. Although he returns to live with the Dursleys when school is out for summer, knows that he is a powerful and skilled wizard and looks forward to learning more magic and making more friends when he returns the following year

Hogwarts: Hogwarts is the best wizard's school in the magic world to which Harry Potter attends. Albus Dumbledore is the headmaster of the school and top wizard of the magical world. The majority of the novel takes place in Hogwarts, where Harry and his friends live in Gryffindor House, win the House Cup, and save the Sorcerer's Stone from the evil Voldemort.

4 Privet Drive: 4 Privet Drive is the home of the Dursleys and Harry for the first ten years of his life. It is here that Dumbledore leaves the baby Harry to be raised and it is here that he sends so many letters that are never opened.

Gringotts: Gringotts is the Wizards Bank, located under London, under the Underground train system, is run by goblins, and stores numerous vaults of wealth and treasures. Harry's inheritance is safely stored at Gringotts, as is the Sorcerer's Stone before Hagrid takes it to Hogwarts. Gringotts is in the news because of several break-in attempts...to steal the hidden Stone.

The Daily Prophet: The Daily Prophet is the newspaper of the magic world, which Hagrid (among others) reads on a daily basis. It is in this newspaper that Harry learns of the break-in attempts at Gringotts.

Diagon Alley: Diagon Alley is the first magical place that Harry visits with Hagrid. In the Alley, Harry learns about magic and buys all of his necessities for school - including his wand, books, cloak, and more.

The Leaky Cauldron: The Leaky Cauldron is the first store in Diagon Alley that Harry and Hagrid visit to purchase his materials for Hogwarts. It is through a brick behind the Leaky Cauldron that Hagrid and Harry enter Diagon Alley.

Knuts: Knuts are bronze pieces of money used in the wizard world. There are also Sickles (silver) and Galleons (gold).

Quidditch: Quidditch is the wizard equivalent of football (or soccer). Harry masters this sport quickly and becomes the first first-year allowed to play for the House Cup.

Madam Malkin's: Madam Malkin's is the cloak store where Harry waits for Hagrid to buy a drink. Inside, he meets a little spoiled boy there who informs him of so many places, activities, and objects in the wizard world that he does not yet understand. The boy turns out to be his future nemesis, Draco Malfoy.

Slytherin: Slytherin is Gryffindor's rival house, and the one to which Draco Malfoy belongs and Professor Snape controls and heads. According to myth and rumor, Voldemort was a member of Slytherin when he attended Hogwarts years ago.

Hufflepuff: Hufflepuff is another Hogwart house.

Ollivander's: The shop of wands, where Harry purchases his wand of a phoenix tail.

Harry's wand: The wand that Harry selects (or that selects Harry) has only one brother wand. The matching wand to Harry's belongs to Voldemort.

Gryffindor: Gryffindor is the Hogwart house to which Harry, Hermione, Ron, and Neville belong, and is directed by Professor McGonagall. Although they appear to be in last place in terms of points, they eventually win the House Cup at the conclusion of the novel.

Remembrall: A Remembrall is a ball that tells you what you need to remember and is a gift for Neville from his family. Draco Malfoy steals Neville's Remembrall during flying lessons, causing Harry to race after him to retrieve it. At this point, Harry learns of his phenomenal flying ability.

Nimbus Two Thousand: The Nimbus Two Thousand is the high-tech, fancy broomstick that Harry is given to play Quidditch for Gryffindor.

Invisibility Cloak: Harry receives an Invisibility Cloak as an anonymous gift for Christmas. It belonged to his father and helps Harry uncover many mysteries at Hogwarts. It helps him discover certain truths, but also gets him into trouble.

Mirror of Erised: The Mirror of Erised is a magical grand mirror, with gold inscription on top and claws as feet on the bottom. When one looks into the mirror, one can see his or her own desires and wishes. It is also the mirror that helps Harry obtain the Sorcerer's Stone at the end of the novel.

Muggles: 'Muggle' is the term for normal, regular non-wizard people in the magical world.

Ravenclaw: Ravenclaw is the fourth house in Hogwarts.

Sorcerer's Stone: The Sorcerer's Stone was created by Nicholas Flamel and guarded by Dumbledore at Hogwarts. It grants everlasting life and changes all touched objects to gold. Voldemort seeks the Stone to grant him immortality, while Harry seeks it to save his life and the lives of all wizards at Hogwarts.

Wizard's Chess: Wizard's chess is an animated, life-like game of chess, where the figurines fight and defeat one another on their own. Ron, Hermione, and Harry must pass through and win a life-size game of Wizard's Chess in order to get to the Sorcerer's Stone.

Cupboard Under the Stairs: The Cupboard Under the Stairs is Harry's home at the Dursley's house. They force him to sleep in the small compartment while Dudley is given two full bedrooms. Only when Harry's magic seems to pose a threat to the family, do they let him sleep in a bed outside the cupboard.

Platform Nine and Three Quarters : Platform Nine and Three Quarters is the magical platform from where the train to Hogwarts leaves. It is unseen to the muggles and can only be reached by concentrating hard and walking (or running) into the brick wall between platforms nine and ten.

The Sorting Hat: The Sorting Hat is a large, black, pointed 'witch' hat that speaks. It decides in which house each child belongs after being placed upon its head. When it makes a decision, it calls out the name of the house. The Sorting Hat is a vital component to the initiation of the new students of Hogwarts.
